RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline (NSAH) which provides 24/7 sexual assault crisis support to survivors and their loved ones across the country. The NSAH provides services via phone and online chat. The NSAH Learning Specialist will be responsible for developing language, keywords, phrasing, and conversation flows for the National Sexual Assault Hotline's inaugural Chatbot. This position will lead efforts to ensure that RAINN's chatbot is specially trained to provide instantaneous information on critical topics including: understanding sexual assault, consent, disclosing sexual assault, medical resources, mandatory reporting, and reporting to law enforcement. It will also allow users to search for local service providers. While the RAINN website currently offers diverse and meaningful information for survivors and their loved ones, our chatbot would expand access to content and better tailor information and resources to users' non-crisis needs. 

This is a temporary part-time position (approximately 20 hours per week) and continued employment is contingent on grant funding.  


Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Develop and implement a comprehsive list of keywords and phrases commonly used by individuals seeking help related to sexual violence.
  • Create and manage a database of conversational cues, keywords, and associated responses and resources for online visitors.
  • Develop language for chatbot conversation flows to improve access to NSAH resources.
  • Collaborate with the Tech Chatbot Trainer to analyze chatbot interactions to identify gaps in, and refine content through user feedback and analysis of performance metrics.
  • In collaboration with the Affiliate and Resources Manager, assess the resource and information needs of NSAH users and identify new responses and resources to meet those needs. 
  • Utilize research and partner feedback to identify keywords and language cues that indicate particular types of visitor needs. 
  • All other duties, as assigned.

Position Specifications/Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required: 

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in social services or a related field.
  • 2+ years providing working in the field of sexual violence.
  • 1+ years of experience providing direct services in the field of sexual violence, strongly preferred.
  • 1+ year of experience undertaking research activities in a social science or technical field, strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated expertise and knowledge of sexual assault and crisis intervention services.
  • Familiarity with instant messaging and online communication.
  • Full professional fluency (spoken and written) in English and ability to pass a proficiency test during the interview process.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and maintain composure during stressful situations.
  • Ability to collaborate across departments and disciplines on projects.
  • Ability to solve problems and deal with a wide range of situations.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions written and oral.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment when faced with complex decisions.
  • Resiliently positive and energetic attitude, with the ability to successfully work on a team and independently.
  • Must be able to work on--site at RAINN's office
  • Must complete and pass a criminal background check (administered by RAINN). 


Physical Activities

The following physical activities described are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions and expectations:

  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position 80% of the time.
  • The person in this position needs to occasionally move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, etc.
  • Must be able to operate a computer (typing 35-45 wpm with accuracy) and other office productivity machinery (e.g., copier and fax machine).
  • Must have vision correctable to a level where an individual can operate a computer; visualize text on a computer monitor.


Environmental Conditions

There are no harmful environmental conditions that are present for this position.  The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
