National Sexual Assault Hotline Internship

The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network is the nation's largest anti-sexual assault organization. RAINN operates the National Sexual Assault Hotline ( NSAH) at 1.800.656.HOPE and the National Sexual Assault Online Hotline at rainn.org in both English & Spanish. RAINN publicizes the hotline's free, confidential services; educates the public about sexual assault; and leads national efforts to prevent sexual assault, improve services to victims and ensure that perpetrators are brought to justice.

Successful interns candidates will show strong skills in communicating empathy and compassion, professional writing, and working independently. Prior experience working with survivors of sexual violence is not necessarily required. RAINN offers a 40-hr training program for interns to give you the tools and knowledge to effectively support trauma survivors. Each semester interns will:

  • Complete a 40 hr training program encompassing sexual assault, domestic violence, crisis intervention and online communication.
  • Help people from all over the country find resources and support in the recovery process.
  • Provide vital research assistance for RAINN's hotlines.
  • Be part of a national volunteer community with members across the country.
  • Opportunities to attend community outreach events or Congressional hearings related to sexual assault.


  • Be on time for shifts scheduled using the online hotline website
  • Complete 40 hours of crisis intervention training
  • Follow all RAINN policies & protocols while completing hotline work
  • Remain supportive and engaged with all hotline visitors
  • Provide support on research and administrative tasks relative to the online hotline's expanding volunteer program


  • Applicable major in social sciences or humanities field
  • Able to work some nights and/or weekends from home for training and potentially hotline shifts
  • Typing speed of at least 40 words per minute
  • Exceptional communication skills both verbal & written
  • Computer proficiency including instant messaging is a must

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Native fluency or full proficiency in both written and spoken Spanish
  • Prior experience in a victim services setting


  • Develop and enhance crisis intervention skills
  • Learn best practices in the new field of online advocacy and intervention services
  • Provide a safe and secure place for victims of sexual assault and abuse
  • Flexible hours

This is an unpaid internship and is solely being offered in exchange for university course credit. The internship requires 15-20 hours per week depending on university requirements, with close to 50% of that time serving visitors on the hotline.
