Position Description

The Policy Associate will assist with all aspects of RAINN's policy work, including research, government relations, and advocacy efforts. The associate will serve as a primary liaison to support RAINN's role in the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative, Training and Technical Assistance (SAKI) project. SAKI is a project of the Justice Department's Bureau of Justice Assistance. This position requires occasional travel to support the SAKI project.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Under the direction of the Vice President of Public Policy, the Policy Associate will:

  • Support and, as requested, participate in lobbying efforts for appropriations and anti-crime issues;
  • Attend/monitor government and coalition meetings;
  • Provide daily updates on congressional schedules and events;
  • Prepare and provide summaries and recommendations on legislation and other policy proposals, as requested;
  • Perform research on issues with relevance to sexual violence;
  • Prepare meeting materials and research, including to support media inquiries received by RAINN's communications department;
  • Maintain a database of key policy department contacts;
  • Write and update materials, including fact sheets and newsletter articles, as assigned;
  • Support RAINN's work on the Sexual Assault Kit Initiative by:
    • Attending stakeholder and grantee meetings; developing materials and participating in discussions with grantees and project partners, including consultants, law enforcement, and community partners;
    • Providing, as requested, on-site and remote training, technical assistance and support to SAKI sites;
    • Participating in calls and meetings with SAKI partner agencies and government stakeholders;
    • Coordinating with project partners to identify the most effective training and support for various sites;
    • Assisting with organizing and tracking details for project-related meetings and events;
    • Keeping records and details and preparing reports to submit to the lead project organization (Research Triangle International);
    • Building and sustaining relationships with SAKI project partners and grantees;
  • In coordination with department staff, update RAINN's state law databases;
  • All other duties, as assigned.

Position Specifications/Requirements:

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge and/or ability required:

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree required; graduate degree strongly preferred.
  • Minimum three years of legislative or similar experience strongly preferred.
  • Solid knowledge of and familiarity with policy issues related to sexual violence, including response and investigation, including the role of forensic DNA preferred.
  • Experience and success with developing training curriculum and educational materials preferred.
  • Exceptional analytical, research and organizational skills a must.
  • Strong interpersonal skills with exceptional communication and presentation skills, both written and spoken.
  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent time-management and prioritization skills.
  • Must be able to perform with minimal supervision and function well in a cooperative team environment. S/he must possess the ability to effectively relate to a wide variety of people and demonstrate creativity in addressing assignments and problem solving.
  • Experience with and skill in statistical analysis a plus, but not required.
  • Ability to exercise good professional judgment and ethical behavior in handling sensitive material with discretion.
  • Commitment to RAINN's mission and goals.
  • Ability to travel as necessary (approximately 20%).
  • Must complete a criminal background check (administered by RAINN).
