As a key member of RAINN's communications team, the staff writer will serve as the primary writer and editor for RAINN's public facing content and internal communications and assist in strategic messaging work with outside partners.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide insights for developing and creating new web pages, write and edit pages, and keep messaging current and consistent.
  • Perform content management functions for rainn.org: edit pages, publish new pages, update home page, upload images, and implement key word and tagging system and ensure that published content meets section 508 guidelines.
  • Draft monthly news articles.
  • Conceptualize and write monthly newsletter.
  • Assist in the creation of new educational and/or informational material for a variety of audiences, both internal and external.
  • Provide language insights and strategic writing support for both RAINN staff and organizational partners or clients.
  • Develop Survivor Stories and Volunteer Fundraiser Spotlights, interviewing subjects and writing content.
  • Maintain official RAINN style guide and ensure consistency of writing across all platforms
  • Edit and ensure consistency in hotline newsletters.
  • Editing support as needed.
  • In conjunction with Vice President of Communications, build strong rapport with members of RAINN's leadership team to help them produce interesting and shareable content that highlights their work and ideas.
  • Drive the process for creating a regular cadence of content to support RAINN's platform to include, but not limited to, speeches, presentations and bylined articles.
  • All other duties as assigned.

Position Specifications/Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required:

  • 3-5 years of experience conceptualizing, writing and ghostwriting articles
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field.
  • Strong, adaptable writing.
  • Demonstrated ability to work with peers and upper management.
  • Ability to work with wide range of people, including technology experts and vendors.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and maintain composure during stressful situations; ability to handle shifting and multiple priorities.
  • A keen editorial eye, sharp instincts with excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment and independently, maintaining communication with relevant coworkers and department heads.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to meet deadlines and fact-check information.
  • Familiarity with content management systems, Drupal preferred, and web functionality.
  • Computer proficiency (MS Office, digital editing, web search, databases).
  • Must be able to pass criminal background check (administered by RAINN).

  • The person in this position needs to regularly move about inside the office to access file cabinets, office equipment, etc.
  • Must be able to remain in stationary position 80% of the time.
  • Must be able to get to locations outside of the office independently, without physical assistance.
  • Must be able to operate a computer and other office productivity machinery (e.g., copier and fax machine).
  • Must have vision correctable to a level where individual can operate a computer; visualize text on a computer monitor.
