The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network seeks a Postdoctoral Research Associate to conduct applied research, continuous quality improvement and evaluation of services for survivors and their loved ones. The postdoctoral associate will support the development and evaluation of a mobile app for survivors funded by the Office for Victims of Crime's Vision 21 Initiative. The app will facilitate access to individual and group support, self-care for sexual assault survivors, as well as information and referrals. The successful candidate will help to strengthen the provision of live, one-on-one support, crisis intervention, and information for sexual assault survivors.  More broadly, the work will help to fill the research-practice gap in victim services and leverage existing data to inform the field consistent with Vision 21 priorities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will support RAINN's research and evaluation activities as follows: 

  • Recommend evidence-based content for the app and victim services, informed by current research in mental health services and self-care for sexual assault survivors
  • Use anonymous data from the National Sexual Assault Hotline to examine survivors' needs and services provided, and recommend ways enhance and tailor services
  • Collaborate with tech department on creation, maintenance and updates to assessment tools (e.g., mobile app rating scales, mood tracking)
  • Prepare research and evaluation protocols for Institutional Review Board approval
  • Examine how user characteristics are related to app engagement, and recommend ways to enhance engagement and utility of app
  • Evaluate how the HelpRoom (group chat) activity and services are affected by the app, and make data-based recommendations for enhancements to the service
  • Communicate findings to staff, public, and scientific audiences
  • Prepare findings for publication in social science peer-review journals

Position Specifications/Requirements

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required:

  • Experience in victimology and/or victim services research
  • Four or more years of experience in database management using SPSS
  • Experience creating graphics for data visualization 
  • Minimum four graduate-level courses in statistics and research methods
  • Strong technical writing skills
  • Excellent English-language communication skills (oral and written)
  • Work on-site at RAINN's office and to attend meetings as required
  • Comfortable discussing issues surrounding sexual violence.
  • Specialized knowledge relevant to victim services
  • PhD in social sciences (e.g., psychology, public health, social work) or related field required
  • Expertise in m-Health a plus
  • Must be comfortable discussing issues surrounding sexual violence;
  • Must complete and pass a criminal background check administered by RAINN.
